The Government last week announced that teachers will receive an above-inflation pay rise.
Starting salaries for new teachers will now be by 5.5% bigger, whilst existing teachers will see their pay increase by 2.75%. This follows a review by the independent School Teachers’ Review Body. This amounts to the biggest pay rise in 15 years.
The Department for Education say that this is the first step to the aim of offering a starting salary to all new teachers of £30,000 by 2022/2023.
This means the minimum starting salary for a qualified teacher in 2020/21 will rise to £25,714 outside of London, rising to £32,157 in inner London. It works out as an increase equivalent to - on average - £1,250 for classroom teachers and an extra £1,970 on average for headteachers.
The recommendations amount to a 3.1 per cent increase in the overall pay bill for 2020-21. This will be funded by schools; however, it has been announced that schools will get an increase in funding worth £2.6 billion.
